Is the F-Bomb Still A Bomb?

You’ve spent more than 12 hours on your history essay. It’s 15% of your grade, and an A is a must. You type the final words, and cheer in jubilation because you are finally done. Then the power goes out. You never saved it. All your work is gone. With this realization, out comes the F-bomb. In situations like this, the use of profanity is understandable; however, more and more, profanity is used carelessly.

Profanity has become more of something you do, and less of something that has meaning. As a result of overuse, curses will soon lose the force and impact that they currently have.

Curses – vulgar language and profanity- are progressively being used to invoke laughter as a form of humor; this results in new generations quickly becoming desensitized to profane and vulgar language. Many young comedians are using profane language as a form of comedy. Bill Bellamy, actor/comedian, says that you don’t “have to curse people to death to get a laugh. It’s shocking, but it’s not funny.”(Jet Magazine). Comedians can be funny without cursing, and vulgarity is largely translated into other parts of the media.

Curses and vulgar language are increasingly used in the music industry. Drake, a popular rapper, continually repeats the f-bomb in the chorus of his song Started From the Bottom. This song and many others can be heard on everyday, average radio channels, and vulgar and profane language is a major contributor in his and many other musicians’ songs. Curses have become too mainstream in everyday music, and the overuse of swearing can actually have a negative effect on the curse itself.

If curses are used in everyday language, then they lose the powerful meanings and emotions they have and evoke. This would cause the english language to greatly suffer. It would be driven to create more profanity. (Bethune) This means that if vulgar and profane language loses its “Boom” factor, new profanity must be created, and again it would become overused. Like an endless cycle, words become profanity, become overused, and then new profanity will be needed. Profane language is unique, and should be used only in moments of shock, and when absolutely necessity.

Not only is cursing powerful, but it is actually kept in a separate section of the brain from where normal speech is processed. Neurological disorders like Aphasia, which causes the loss of speech and the ability to understand speech, support the idea that curses are differentiated from everyday speech. Those who have Aphasia can understand and verbalize profanity more so than other words. Even when a person’s ability to understand ordinary words and phrases malfunctions, profanity and vulgarity are still part of a person’s vocabulary. Cursing is meant to be done in a way that expresses serious emotion, and this is supported by its ability to outlast other forms of speech.

Cursing is needed. It helps to show serious emotions. However, newer generations think of those who swear as, “champions of honesty and refreshing directness”, but to the people that were “raised in polite societies”(Lileks), cursing makes people look like they are less refined. Along with being used in everyday speech, cursing is becoming a filler, a word used to take up an empty space. Cursing inappropriately can soon become a bad habit, and habits are hard to break.

In most cases, profanity should be exchanged with other, less powerful words. Guy Martin, a writer for Men’s Health, explains how using alternatives like “shoot” can make your cursing even more powerful. In these cases, curses can be used “like a bomb: explosion, concussion, then silence”. This way, your profanity doesn’t lose the power that it has, and you can still express strong emotion.

Using a curse too much, ruins the word for everyone else. Next time you’re about to swear, think, “Is it necessary?”

Let’s Meet at Mitsuwa: My journey at the Japanese market

Hey guys! So I take Japanese at my high school, and today the school took some of us to Mitsuwa, a Japanese market in New Jersey. Mitsuwa was a really cool experience for us. We went to the market and bought food from the shops. The shops have lots of really cool things. There is a bookstore that ha lots of Japanese Manga, as well as anime and Japanese fashion magazines and other types of magazines.

We came during lunch time, so we all had lunch in the food court. All the food was really good, and they give you lots of it. There were tempura places, rice places, and so much more.

I got lots of Japanese snacks and candy. As a first time shopper there, I would have to say that it is kind of overwhelming. Plan to stay there a few hours. I would definitely recommend going, and I hope that I can visit again soon.

Here is a vlog of my friends and I at Mitsuwa!

Irregular Habits: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and The Irregular at Magic High School

(Just to warm my usual readers, today’s post will talk about k-drama, and anime, and if you’re not into that kind of stuff, then you should skip this post.)

I’m going to be honest and say that I am not really a k-drama(Korean drama) person, and, up until a week ago, I had never before even seen the description to a k-drama, never mind having watched one.

On the other hand, I have some friends who really enjoy k-drama, and one of them was watching one. As she was watching it, I was next to her, and it seemed really interesting. She told me that it is called Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, and that she thought I would like it.

So I gave it a shot, and so far I am extremely hooked on it. I’m 12 episodes in, and I think there are 16 in the series. I’m so close to being done, and I want to know what happens, but at the same time, I don’t want it to end.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is about a 27 year old woman, who lives in Korea with her family. Do Bong Soon has a secret, a gift that has been down her family for generations.

Image result for do bong soon

The gift of strength is passed down generation to generation through the matriarchal line. Do Bong Soon has been in love with her best friend In Gook Do, but it has been a one sided love.

When the president of Ain Software sees Do Bong Soon use her incredible strength, he hires her as his bodyguard. With serial kidnappings popping up in Do Bong Soon’s neighborhood, she has a lot to worry about.

You guys should really give this show a chance! Below is the trailer to the show, and if you do watch it, then “viki” is a good website to view it through.

On top of this, I started to watch the anime The Irregular at Magic High School through Netflix. I really enjoyed it, and because I enjoyed it so much, I decided to read the short novels that the anime is based off of.

This show (and book) takes place in the year 2095, when magic has become a new form of science. Tatsuya Shiba and his sister Miyuki are first years at First Magic High School. Miyuki has been labeled as a Course 1 student, dubbed by the others as Blooms, and Tatsuya, a course 2 student (dubbed as a Weed).

The story follows their journeys through the school. Miyuki has a major brother complex, and Tatsuya, a sister complex, and if you’re not into that, then you probably shouldn’t read this. If you don’t mind it though, then you should definitely look into this.

Characters That Steal Your Heart: The Percy Jackson Series

First things first, I would just like to say how happy I am that Beauty and the Beast got remade! And to top the present off with a bow, Emma Watson is playing Belle(please know who that is!). I haven’t been to the movies to see it yet, but any day now I will. Now back to the book talk.

Image result for beauty and the beast

I love many books (almost every single one that I have ever read), but for the last four or so years, the Percy Jackson series has really held a special place in my heart.

When I first started my journey with Rick Riordan (the author), I actually started with the Heroes of Olympus series. This wasn’t my brightest idea, mostly because that series occurs after the Percy Jackson series.

I loved the Heroes of Olympus series. It was the series that finally got me interested in books. Without it, I would have been like every other teenager, and I would be watching tv, or obsessed with social media. Instead, in my free time, I can almost always be found with a book in my hand.

Image result for heroes of olympus books

During the first few books of the second series, I am sad to say that I didn’t care about Percy or Annabeth that much. That soon changed after I read the Percy Jackson series.

Now, four years later, I am still deathly in love with Percy and Annabeth. (I don’t care if people say that it is weird to be in love with a fictional character.)

Some people might think that this series is for children, but that is not true. My 50 year old father read Percy Jackson and he also loved it. These books do not have certain age on them; no matter what gender, age, race, etc., you are, you can still read about Percy and his Friend’s adventures.

Image result for percy jackson series

Here is a brief description on what the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, is all about:

Percy tries to be normal. He tries to be good. But no matter what he does, danger seems to follow him around like a heat seeking missile. But, one day on a school field trip in sixth grade at his boarding school, Percy realizes that something is very different about him.

One of his classmates, Nancy Bobofit, is bullying and harassing Percy’s best friend Grover. When Percy gets angry- the fountain behind her rises up and pulls her in, drenching her from head to toe.

He looks around, everyone is saying that he pushed her in, but he knows he didn’t. Then, when his Pre-Algebra teacher pulls him over to talk to him, away from the prying eyes of the rest of his classmates.

Instead of talking- she attacks, and she is demanding he return to lightning bolt he stole. Percy knows that he hasn’t stolen anything (never mind a lightning bolt), and so he is rightfully very confused.

Then Mr. Brunner, the other teacher at the field trip, shows up at the end of the room. He throws him something- a pen? But when Percy clicks it, it turns into a sword.

Somehow Percy fights her off, and she disappears into a cloud of dust. When he returns, no one questioned where their teacher went. Later that year, when his mother learns about what happened, she rushes him off to a place that she says is “safe”. There he learns about a frightening truth that changes everything he thought he knew about the world.

The ancient Greek gods and monsters are real and alive. And his father is one of them.

Please give this book a chance! It is one of my utmost favorite series!

Opposite Sides of the Same Coin: Legend by Marie Lu

A couple years ago, I read the Legend series, and I was immediately hooked.

Image result for legend by marie lu

Legend is a dystopian book, like The Hunger GamesDivergentThe Maze Runner, etc., that takes place in what was once known at the United States. What was once one whole country, is now two separate nations that are constantly at war.

Image result for united states outline

The book’s point of view changes between two characters, Day and June, who both live in the Republic in an area that was once known as California,  are both on opposite sides of the economy.

June is a child prodigy who was born to to a very wealthy family. She is fifteen years old, and is attending one of the countries top schools, to help groom her for her very bright future.

Day, on the other hand, is living in slums. Not only is he the country’s most wanted criminal, but, unknown to the public, day is only a 15 year old boy.

Living in ghetto has more down sides than first thought- a deadly plague is making its way across the nation, and every day, Day worries that someone in his family will be the next one to have it.

When Day’s little brother comes down with the plague, Day knows that he doesn’t have many options left, and when he hears about a supposed plague, he knows that he has to get it to save his family.

Not only does Day fail to procure the cure, he also gets framed for a murder he didn’t commit. The guard that they think he murdered is named Metais, and he is no random officer.

He is June’s older brother, and June in not about to let this crime go unpunished. But in their journey, Day and June learn startling truths that about their country, and they earn just how far the Republic will go to keep these secrets secret.

Personally, this is one of my favorite books, and I liked it even more than Divergent and Maze Runner. The characters are much more lively, and the story is more developed.

For years I have hoped that this book would be made into a movie. I think that it is so much better than some of the other books that have been made into movies, and I know that one day it will be.

A Red Hot Story: A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Hey guys! If you are really into K-Pop and things like that, then I would check out Paint a K-Pop story. It is a blog that talks about all things K-Pop. I will not be writing about manga that often, so if you want more on books like that as well as anime, check out Seasonal Anime and Reviews.

So about a year ago, I found out about this app/website called “Overdrive”. Overdrive is basically a place where you can borrow e-books from your local library. All you need is a library card, and you have a bunch of books available for you right at your fingertips. The books that are available to you depend on your library.

On Overdrive I have recently read A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet. The main character in this story is Cat, a girl masquerading as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She runs into their traveling caravan when she was 15 with cuts, bruises, dirt, while  being extremely malnourished. They take her in, and over time she becomes one of their own.

But Cat has a secret, one that could put her and everyone she knows in danger. Cat is a Kingmaker, a person who can tell truth from lie. They make and break kingdoms, and they only come once every 200 years.

During one of the caravan’s stops, Cat comes across a visiting warlord, Griffin, who can immediately tell that she is Kingmaker. Griffin wants Cat to be a part of his newly conquered kingdom, so she can help them compete with the magic possessing kingdoms around it. Cat wants no part of this conflict.

So what does Griffin do? He kidnaps her with a magical rope. Cat tries to escape multiple times, but she finds it more and more difficult to stay away from the allure of Griffin and his Beta team. Friendships, and maybe even romance ensue.

I enjoyed this book a lot. So much so that right after I finished this one I bought the next one and read it. Some of the story line is kind of obvious, but I still think that the story can be enjoyed.

The second book in the series is A Breath of Fire. It is a stunning sequel and it might even surpass the first.

The bad new is that the third book in the “Kingmaker Chronicles” isn’t out yet. I will be anxiously awaiting Heart on Fire, the breathtaking conclusion to the series. It will be available in stores on January 2, 2018.

The OHSHC Trifecta:The anime, manga, and movie that make up Ouran Hist School Host Club

I don’t read まんが(manga) much, but when I do I usually like the ones that I read. My first(and favorite) manga that I have read is Ouran High School Host Club, by Bisco Hatori.

Image result for ouran highschool host club

The story of all of the characters is really interesting, and it is really fun. Some of it can be serious, but most of it is really goofy and funny.  The main character Haruhi, is going to Ouran Academy, a prestigious こおこお-kookoo(high school), as a scholarship student. She is highly intelligent, and studies hard.

On her first day of school she wanders into an empty きょうしつ-kyooshitsu(classroom), in the music hallway. But she comes to find that the classroom is not as empty as she thought.

Inside this music room is where Ouran’s own “Host Club” where young high school age boys “entertain” bored girls. This usually means they cosplay, eat sweets, and talk and flirt with these girls. The 6 boys greet Haruhi and startled, she goes to leave the room.

Image result for expensive vase from OHSHC

While she is walking away from the Host Club, she knocks over an expensive vase that the boys were going to sell at an auction. Because Haruhi broke it, she must be the one to pay for the vase.

Because this is an elite school for the uber rich, the vase is naturally expensive. Haruhi is a scholarship student that does not have the おかね-okane(money) to pay the boys back for the vase.

Since she cannot pay them, she must work for them as a part of the host club, so she can eventually pay back her さいむ-saimu (debt).

Oh, and did I forget to mention that everyone at the school thinks she is a boy? They do. Probably because of her short hair, skinny figure, and the huge glasses that make her large wide eyes appear smaller.

Image result for haruhi fujioka with glasses

This story really develops, and by the end of the 18 volume series, and Haruhi and the characters all learn important lessons and make memories and relationships that none of them will ever forget.

I don’t know if you have noticed that the pictures in my post don’t look like a manga or not, but if you have, you are a true fan of OHSHC and manga and anime.

OHSHC is not just a manga, it is also an あにめ(anime), and a movie! I haven’t seen the movie yet, but while it does have an ending different to manga, the anime is extremely good.

Not a False Note: My views on the False Prince

Before I talk about the book,  I want to talk tot you guys about how excited I was when it snowed on Saturday!!!

I love snow! I love when you step outside into the cold, hard snow and you can hear the crunch of every step you make.

The wind comes out in white puffs as your cheeks turn pink from the cold. I also love the fresh smell that comes from snow. The white powder gets squished underneath you boots as you walk outside.

I get so disappointed when snow turns that ugly black color from the dirty streets.  The snow is already melting though:(

One of my absolute favorite books ever is The False Prince by Jennifer A. Neilson. I am the type of person who loves books about kingdoms and royalty and things like that, and I knew that I would love this book.

But that wasn’t the only thing that drew me to this book. Let’s be honest now. The saying,

“Don’t judge a book by its cover”

is a completely empty saying.

Most readers know that most of the time, when they are looking for books to read, the don’t carefully read the backs of every book in the store.

They browse and look around at the covers and title’s on all the books, and when one stands out to them, they pick up the book and then they read the back.

Image result for books with nice covers
See how these are colorful and they stand out?

It is safe to say that I did that with this book, and I wasn’t disappointed.

I was really drawn to Sage and his character, and how he wasn’t greedy, and he just wanted to live his life. I feel like this really sums up Sage and all of his strengths and weaknesses,

“If I had to do it all over again, I would not have chosen this life. Then again, I’m not sure I ever had a choice”- Sage, Page 1 The False Prince

Having this on the first page of the book, also gives a sense of foreboding. It gets you thinking, “What could have happened to him where he would think like this? Where he would image the whole world against him”.

Sage, an orphan boy from the city of Carthya, is picked up off of the streets for his uncanny resemblance to the lost prince Jarron.

He must compete with four other orphans to impersonate Jarron and eventually be the king of Carthya. But, if he loses, he faces the very real possibility of death, for Conner, the man running this hoax of a contest, will not let anyone ruin his plan to become the puppet master of the kingdom.

Image result for castle
I feel like this is Carthya-like

He is brought from the streets, to a beautiful mansion, but more dangers might be hiding inside this beautiful home, then there are residing on the outside world. As mysteries keep unfolding, Sage finds himself in the middle of story that is yet to conclude.

Can Sage find a way to become, The False Prince? Find out in this heart stopping novel by Jennifer A. Neilson.

Volde-more: Who else wants more about the person behind the mask that is Lord Voldemort?

*****Firstly- this blog is made for those who have finished reading the Harry Potter series. I don’t want anyone to have any information spoiled for them before they read it, no matter how small. I will also be including information on the fairly recent movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. ******

A couple of week ago I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with my friends at the movie theater, and I absolutely loved it!!! Even though it doesn’t actually involve any of the characters from the original Harry Potter, it is a story from the world of the witches and wizards, and it is probably a story that Harry and his friends were taught in their history class.

Image result for fantastic beasts
Image from http://www.laineygossip.com/Fantastic-Beasts-and-Where-to-Find-Them-movie-review-starring-Eddie-Redmayne/45541

Seeing this movie made me think more about Tom Marvolo Riddle, the child behind the mask that is Lord Voldemort. The orphan, Credence Barbone, from the movie reminded me somewhat of Tom. Just like Tom, this child had grown up in an orphanage with people who did not care for him. Both of them were lonely, and looking for someone to love and care for them. Once I made this connection, I started to feel more compassionate towards Tom. Yes, Voldemort did horrible things to the Wizard and Muggle world alike, and I’m not saying he was justified for what he had done, but when you think about it, Tom is just a scared little boy. He was tired of people pushing him around. He wanted others to suffer like he had suffered. Why should he be the only one to suffer. When you think about it, many people in real life think this way too. This is sometimes why bullies make fun of and tease others. They just want the hurting to stop and for them to be heard.

So it is safe to say that the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, made me want to know more about Tom Riddle, before he became Lord Voldemort. I thought, What if J.K. Rowling made a book based off of the life of Tom Riddle? I even thought of a name that the book could be called: “I am Lord Voldemort” because this is an anagram for “Tom Marvolo Riddle”. The story would talk about his life as a child, maybe 7 or 8. Then it would jump to his life around the time he was 12 years of age- when he was accepted into Hogwarts. Then the story could jump around into the major events in his time at Hogwarts. Maybe it would end right before he became Lord Voldemort, or it would end with the event that pushed him over the edge. I don’t know, but it should be something like that.

Image result for tom riddle i am lord voldemort anagram
Found on this website from the second Harry Potter Movie http://mugglenet.tumblr.com/post/71804593678/harry-potter-anagram

If J.K. Rowling does end up making a book like this(and I hope she does), then it will most likely evolve into the movie world. All of my friends who have read the story of Harry Potter are all similarly intrigued, maybe even more so than me, about Tom Riddle. This (hopefully future) book would most likely even be as famous as Harry Potter, and the only reason not more so, because you would have to read Harry Potter to even know about Tom Riddle.

Can you guys please fill this poll out?!?! I would love to know what you guys think!!!

-bookworm727 p.s. Don’t be afraid to comment!!!

******First I would just like to point out that my blog is a no politics zone. (Not that anyone has actually said anything about the elections, because they haven’t). I don’t like the conflict that always ensues in a conversation about politics.

And now for the book talk.(p.s. I have decided that instead of actually critiquing books, I am going to talk about books, kind of like a book club, except with one person.

A few years ago I read The Mortal Instruments series, and I loved it. When I am reading most books I can make assumptions about the ending and they usually come out to be relatively true. However when I read The Mortal Instruments I was constantly surprised.

So when I heard about Cassandra Clare’s new companion series to the original books, I was intrigued. (There is also another companion series that she already made, but it is in the past, and it didn’t really interest me.) Image result for lady midnight

So I purchased the book and I have been reading it, and it seems to be very different from her first series, especially the characters and the style of writing. For example, in The Mortal Instruments, the books are in third person, and they are in one perspective. Lady Midnight is in third person as well, but it changes between perspectives.

The main character, Emma Carstairs, is very different from Clary Fairchild. Emma is very bad with authority, and she doesn’t believe in the laws of the Clave. Emma and Clary are two very different characters, and her ability to show the point of views of two different people, just helps to show how great of a writer Cassandra Clare is.

I am not far enough along in the book to know if this is true or not, but I have been told that sometime in the book, Jace and Clary show up, and I am really excited for that! I really miss those two, as well as all the others from The Mortal Instruments series.

So far I really like this book, and I can’t wait to see/ read what happens next!!!
