Characters That Steal Your Heart: The Percy Jackson Series

First things first, I would just like to say how happy I am that Beauty and the Beast got remade! And to top the present off with a bow, Emma Watson is playing Belle(please know who that is!). I haven’t been to the movies to see it yet, but any day now I will. Now back to the book talk.

I love many books (almost every single one that I have ever read), but for the last four or so years, the Percy Jackson series has really held a special place in my heart.

When I first started my journey with Rick Riordan (the author), I actually started with the Heroes of Olympus series. This wasn’t my brightest idea, mostly because that series occurs after the Percy Jackson series.

I loved the Heroes of Olympus series. It was the series that finally got me interested in books. Without it, I would have been like every other teenager, and I would be watching tv, or obsessed with social media. Instead, in my free time, I can almost always be found with a book in my hand.

During the first few books of the second series, I am sad to say that I didn’t care about Percy or Annabeth that much. That soon changed after I read the Percy Jackson series.

Now, four years later, I am still deathly in love with Percy and Annabeth. (I don’t care if people say that it is weird to be in love with a fictional character.)

Some people might think that this series is for children, but that is not true. My 50 year old father read Percy Jackson and he also loved it. These books do not have certain age on them; no matter what gender, age, race, etc., you are, you can still read about Percy and his Friend’s adventures.

Here is a brief description on what the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, is all about:

Percy tries to be normal. He tries to be good. But no matter what he does, danger seems to follow him around like a heat seeking missile. But, one day on a school field trip in sixth grade at his boarding school, Percy realizes that something is very different about him.

One of his classmates, Nancy Bobofit, is bullying and harassing Percy’s best friend Grover. When Percy gets angry- the fountain behind her rises up and pulls her in, drenching her from head to toe.

He looks around, everyone is saying that he pushed her in, but he knows he didn’t. Then, when his Pre-Algebra teacher pulls him over to talk to him, away from the prying eyes of the rest of his classmates.

Instead of talking- she attacks, and she is demanding he return to lightning bolt he stole. Percy knows that he hasn’t stolen anything (never mind a lightning bolt), and so he is rightfully very confused.

Then Mr. Brunner, the other teacher at the field trip, shows up at the end of the room. He throws him something- a pen? But when Percy clicks it, it turns into a sword.

Somehow Percy fights her off, and she disappears into a cloud of dust. When he returns, no one questioned where their teacher went. Later that year, when his mother learns about what happened, she rushes him off to a place that she says is “safe”. There he learns about a frightening truth that changes everything he thought he knew about the world.

The ancient Greek gods and monsters are real and alive. And his father is one of them.

Please give this book a chance! It is one of my utmost favorite series!

  1. I also love the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series! I haven’t read them in a long time, but I really feel like I should. My favorite character from the whole series is Leo. Although he isn’t the main “hero” like Percy or Jason, without him, I really think that things wouldn’t turn out the same.

  2. The Percy Jackson series are definitely my favorite books ever! I first read them around 3rd or 4th grade and I still love them! I used to basically just sit and read them, and when I wasn’t I was waiting for a new one to come out. However, I was very disappointed by the movies. They were so different from the books and not even close to being good enough for me. They didn’t even make Annabeth blonde! And they made all the characters in their late teens instead of being Percy’s actual age in the books.
